Borderline volume. Mixing is doable with a mixer and a crew; ready-mix saves labour and gives a more consistent pour. Compare quotes, including short-load fees.

How we calculate

volume (ft³) = length (ft) × width (ft) × thickness (in) ÷ 12
volume (yd³) = ft³ ÷ 27
order = volume × (1 + waste %), rounded up to ¼ yd³

Metric: m³ = length (m) × width (m) × thickness (cm) ÷ 100.

Recommended slab thickness

UseThickness
Walkways, patios, shed bases4 in (10 cm)
Driveways (cars)5 in (12–13 cm)
Garage floors, RV pads6 in (15 cm)

Every extra inch of thickness adds 25% more concrete to a 4 in slab — so check your excavation depth before ordering. Low spots in the subgrade are the most common reason pours come up short.

Frequently asked questions

How much concrete do I need for a 20x20 slab?

A 20 × 20 ft slab at 4 in thick is 4.94 yd³; at 6 in it’s 7.41 yd³. Add 5–10% waste and order ready-mix — that’s 220+ bags otherwise.

How thick should a driveway slab be?

4 in is the minimum for passenger cars; 5–6 in is recommended, especially for trucks or poor soil. Thicken the edges by 2 in where possible.

How much does a concrete slab cost?

Material alone is typically $150–$200 per yd³ for ready-mix in the US (2026), plus delivery and short-load fees. Installed slabs usually run $6–$12 per ft² including base, forms, rebar and finishing.

Do I need rebar or mesh in a slab?

Rebar (#3 or #4 on 18–24 in centres) or welded wire mesh reduces cracking and is required by most codes for driveways and garage floors. Follow your local code or engineer.

What base goes under a concrete slab?

Usually 4 in of compacted gravel (crushed stone) over firm, undisturbed soil. The base thickness does not count toward concrete volume.
