How we calculate

area = length × width
packs = ⌈area × (1 + waste %) ÷ coverage per pack⌉
underlay rolls = ⌈area × 1.05 ÷ roll coverage⌉
baseboard pieces = ⌈(perimeter − doorways × door width) × 1.10 ÷ piece length⌉

Default waste: laminate & vinyl 7%, engineered 8%, solid hardwood 10%; add 8% for diagonal and 13% for herringbone layouts.

Measuring a room for flooring

Measure wall to wall at the widest points, including under door casings and into closets you plan to floor. For irregular rooms, split the floor into rectangles, add the areas and use “Total area” mode.

Pack coverage is printed on the box (e.g. 19.8 ft² or 2.13 m²). Always round up to whole packs — retailers rarely sell partial boxes — and keep one unopened pack for repairs.

Frequently asked questions

How much laminate flooring do I need?

Multiply room length × width and add 7–10% waste for a straight layout. A 15 × 12 ft room (180 ft²) needs 193–198 ft² — 10 packs of 20 ft².

How much extra flooring should I buy?

Laminate and vinyl: 7–10%. Hardwood: 10–15% because some boards have defects. Diagonal layouts add about 8% and herringbone about 13–15%.

Do I need underlay for vinyl plank?

Many LVP planks have an attached pad — adding another can void the warranty. Laminate almost always needs underlay; use one with a vapour barrier over concrete.

How do I calculate baseboard?

Measure the room perimeter, subtract doorways, add 10% for mitre cuts and divide by the piece length. A 15 × 12 ft room with one doorway needs 51 ft → 8 pieces of 8 ft.

Should flooring run parallel to the longest wall?

Usually yes, or toward the main light source. With hardwood over joists, run boards perpendicular to the joists for stiffness.
